Volunteer opportunities with HCRI:

INTAKE:

Respond to requests for help by speaking with potential clients and filling out an intake form. Training will be provided, and no legal experience or education is required. We’re looking for people who are detail oriented and can interact compassionately with people who may be in challenging situations.

ADMINISTRATIVE:

Help with administrative duties. No client contact.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND CONTENT CREATION:

If you have experience with social media or content creation, especially video, get in touch. We need to develop a comprehensive library of online tutorials and self-help resources. If you are a writer, camera person, editor, researcher, or content strategist—or if you just know your way around social media and have time to help us, please let us know.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATION:

If you’ve helped other non-profits coordinate volunteers, we could really use your help

ATTORNEYS:

We will provide training as needed and you can volunteer remotely. We provide limited scope representation and only advocate for patients who have covered benefits they cannot access. Attorneys with knowledge of ERISA law or other health care law are in particular demand, but we can work with attorneys who are interested in developing those skills. We rarely go to court or litigate – often just having an attorney involved motivates insurance companies to meet their legal and moral obligations. We have a sliding scale fee structure, so there is a possibility that our volunteer attorneys might be compensated for their time, probably at far below the market rate, in keeping with our goal of providing services regardless of an ability to pay.

LAW SCHOOLS AND LAW STUDENTS:

We also have opportunities for law students who are interested in internships.

We hope to open law clinics, starting in New York and expanding throughout the country. If you are a law school or a hospital affiliated with a university that has a law school, get in touch with us to see if you can help pioneer a law clinic with the HCRI model, providing direct patient advocacy while teaching law students, students in nursing, medicine, social work, or related fields how to do this work.
