Our business model

HCRI is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization registered in the State of Maryland with Foreign Corporation status in Washington and New York. We can offer services around the country.

Our business model is to accept donations and defray some costs with clients who pay for our services in legal advocacy and training on a sliding scale basis.

We believe in running a non-profit with the same efficiency and accountability that we expected in our for-profit work. We bring the tools of our corporate lives – business plans, projections, risk assessments and careful financial management – into how we grow HCRI. The landscape of philanthropy is changing and we welcome large donors who are interested in partnering with non-profits with an entrepreneurial, results-oriented approach based on strong business fundamentals.

We will always be transparent in our financial dealings, and participate in appropriate certification and monitoring organizations that track the efficacy of non-profits.

We value our independence. We do not take money from organizations affiliated with any political party, from insurance companies, from pharmaceutical companies, or from any organization that might profit from changes in health care policy. But we will provide paid training to those organizations that want to learn more about health care reform and the implications of potential changes to health care policy.

Every donation helps, no matter how small. Our volunteer attorneys will get some compensation from paying clients, but that will be far less than the market rate. The rest of us are volunteers, with jobs and families, but we are deeply committed to this urgent, life saving mission. Your help lets us expand, open legal clinics across the country, train attorneys, law students, social workers, and medical professionals who can then help others. Your donations help us provide more self-help resources, and provide current information to lawmakers and citizens about the real impact of proposed changes to health care policy.

Now is the time. We can’t do this without your help.
